DURAND Stéphan (1986-)

BEFORE MUSIC, LET’S CHITCHAT!

My name is (as you certainly guessed) Stéphan DURAND, and I am a friend of Pierre - Emmanuel DUPONT.

I live in Taillan-Médoc, a town located in the urban community of Bordeaux. I was born on February 11, 1986 inTalence, with Raphaël, my twin brother (however, we have different musical orientations; he’s been practising guitar for 11 years). I also have a sister, Cindy, 22-year-old, who meanly abandoned piano after a few years of practice.

Since my youngest age, I’ve been cultivating two passions of mine: piano, naturally, but also soccer which I practise regularly.

I’ve been playing piano for approximately a dozen years without ever getting bored. The simple fact of intending to stop is henceforth impossible for me because too painful.

Although I play most of the time on an upright piano, I prefer by far the grand piano for its exceptional tone. But the beauty of the sound is not the only criterion to appreciate this friend with whom we share our pains as well as our moments of happiness.

As every beginner, I did at first some years of music theory before stopping to dedicate myself exclusively to the pleasure of playing. I began with classical authors but soon noticed that it was not what I looked for, for I played without pleasure.

My father had the brilliant idea one day to make me listen one Albert Ammons's 33 tours (if you do not know him yet, I warmly encourage you to do so!). It was for me the discovery of a new world, the beginning of an intense love story with music, Blues and Boogie-Woogie.

These two styles were born in the U.S, more exactly in the region of Chicago, where those whom one still called " the Negros " shared through these styles their distress or their joy, setting at the same time the bases of contemporary music.

My father has an amazing collection of Boogie and Blues’s records (all the 33 tours since the beginning of the XXth centuary, and almost all the CDs), with huge artists such Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, Axel Zwinberger. Unfortunately, Boogie and Blues are rather rare nowadays, but I hope this’ll change, one day.

Pierre and I are in love with Boogie and Blues, and we shall not stop composing, so that you may discover them and appreciate them (we shall soon realize together a composition for four hands that we shall propose you in these pages, maybe under a band name).

For my part, I propose you right now two partitions, to allow you to approach both styles, Boogie and Blues, and hope you will take as much pleasure to interpret them as I had to compose them.

Let’s make place for Boogie and Blues!
